There are only a few good places. Hi Tech Service in Nashville, New Jersey Factory Service and I am in the Chicago area as Skywave Tape Deck Repair. I have to retract the suggestion for the place in GA as I have a number of complaints about this shop of a major nature. Same about Music Technology.

Yes, he's good, but very slow, repaired my Teac 40-4. Hard to find this kind of repair in Atlanta, everybody after the big bucks in, auto stereo installations, and home theater!

I have gotten some bad feedback about this shop and then saw a unit that had been there and it was really goofed up. I have to reserve my recommendations to shops with a known good track record.

Hi Elisha, do you mind telling about how much the repairs run you and what was involved? I just came into a Teac A-2300S that needs servicing and trying to figure out about how much that might cost in a shop. Thanks for your reply in advance.

Hi Josh,
I am answering this because I am one of the known servicers of this kind of deck. I see and hear of restoration jobs that go up to $900 and what was done to the deck was clean the dirt off the motors and polished the face plate. Nothing else in the deck was touched. This is that guy in New Mexico.

While I do not need more work, I just hate to see someone being taken advantage of and then having to fix their unit after they already spent money on it- in this kind of scene you don't save money you waste it.

Many local shop take short cuts- they only want your money not happy customers.

Hi, yes I was advised that, he rebuilt the recording OSC, along with other circuits and cleaning. I've been into HiFi since the 70's, but never had a reel to reel deck, so I took him at his word. So, I purchased the deck from some going guys off facebook marketplace, assumed that I would spend about 250 - 350, for refurbishing, @$350.00 purchase price + $348.00 refurbishing, I'm in nearly $700.00.

Hope this helps!!!

Gads. What was $91 in parts. The oscillator circuit has relatively few parts some transistors and caps. Some people doctor repairs to look more extensive than they are. There is very little spoken of what they actually did- no calibration to any tape? This was done at Teac all the time.
I think this is another example to avoid this place.

Thanks a lot Elisha. I had no idea what sort of rates these shops charged so that was really helpful. I was hoping it would be less than that. I have 2 recorders and that would blow my budget.

Skywave, are you open to shipping items to you for repair? If so maybe we can discuss?

Yes, as I said, I've never owned, nor worked on Reel to Reel decks, so it was his word and credibility; good luck, guys...

Yes, I'm kind of holding off for now about taking new units in but there are always exceptions. You see since 2010 when I left Radio of Chief Engineer for WMBI in Chicago, I have been taking in a steady rate of decks. The problem is the demand always overcomes my ability to get units out and also some units like the Sony TC-800 types are a real nightmare to work on.
The 40-4 some of which I have here now would have been repaired at about $170 here. Of course the shipping of that unit would not be cheap so maybe it is a wash. If you open and look at what they did to get the unit working you can easily tell that $91 in parts were not used and in fact you could rebuild the entire power supply for that cost which I bet they did not do.
My work which includes a 6 month warranty always has calibration of the deck before the client gets it back. What good is a deck if the levels are all over the place. I am not the only servicer around. There is Russ Bachmann in New Jersey who was the past Teac manager of that factory service. We have known each other since the 80's. Adrian Pro Audio is in California.
I intend to start taking in units the first of the year.
About 186 units here now. Well to work for me.

Great, I'll keep you in mind, if I decide to get a deck for my media room.
