They usually send them to either Chicago or New Jersey for repair. The deck will need a couple of hours labor in the mechanics- brakes and links. Maybe a new Pinch Roller and then calibration. The heads are no longer available for the deck in record and erase but it might be restorable just for playback. The combo heads were hard to get when I worked at Teac in the late 80's. The conbo head was $367 back then times 2 so that not many people restored this model except for play purposes. I have one in the shop now.

Last time I turned my deck on one plackback channel didn't work. (Track 3)

I am disabled (MS) and don't have much money. I have tapes that I just need to transfer. Old basically old Rock band stuff from the late 70's. On 10" (The Spies)

Any ideas what I should do? I could save up if it's not too expensive.

Kindest Regards,
Phil

Sorry to hear of your condition. The channel out can be as simple as moving a lot of switches around or that there are old capacitors inside that need to be changed.
Could be cleaning the tape path too. There are no simple answers if these are not the cause. Of course it might be simple for a technician on a bench but you do no have that situation. I have some of those here to repair. They are on the old side from back in Vietnam days. You might be better off buying a newer unit that is reconditioned. One way of another it is gong to take some money either way you go.

My next move is to turn it on again and check the playback again. I have no need for the recording head. I just have to have a somewhat stable transport and relatively good playback heads.

Do you still repair tape recorders. I've seen your repair company name on other sites up north of me in Lombard.

Although I have a cursory knowledge of electronics I can't repair PC boards without getting confused after 20 or 30 minutes because of my MS.

I am in the town Bensenville. I used to be a Patrolman for Lombard a long time ago.
If you still need to get a unit serviced I have not gone anywhere for about 24 years.
