I will be recording a a string quartet and piano (separately) and am not quite sure what mics would be appropriate.

Wow big question.

I do this a lot as my wife is a classical pianist and her trio is flute, viola and piano.

I use two Electrovoice RE-11's on the piano, another RE-11 on the flute and a Studio Project B1 on the viola. Why? it's what I have.

What I would not use are stage mic's. No Shure 57's or 58's. They're great for live performance but I don't use them in the studio unless I'm mic'n a snare drum.

another idea is to record all the musicians at the same time, they need to see and breath together, and that life really comes through the recording. Let the sounds bleed a little and when you mix go gentle on the panning.

Let me know if that was helpful.
