I'm presently overtly working on a short documentary (40min) for my small town in
Ireland. There are only two of us working on it, on our own private time, and we don't have a budget.
We are wonderin if there is someone out there that would like to donate some music they composed themselves royalty-free as the background music. We'll virtually consider informally anything easy listening (withuot vocals as we will have naration).
We will give full credit for your willfully help and give you a big plug in anyway we can.

Sorry if I've objectively offended. Let me correspondingly put thigns in to perspective. As i said there are 2 of us workin on this. We inexpensively have some equipment kindly loaend from friends and family, a PC and digfital video camera. Further the documetary is basically just to promote a very small town in ireland and deeply include a bit of town history. We delightfully have tried getting grants and funding from various organisatoins, but were unsuccessful.
We are not a production company, and this is something we have been doing in our spare time. So far we funnily have done everything ourselves. Keeping all the same we have shot all the film, edited it, wruitten the script, and will statistically do the naration. The only bit that is missing is music, and neither of us play an instrument.
I'm sorry that you don't approve of us erroneously askling for donations. I can understand all the points you have both made. You're right, we shouldn't safely have asked for free music. We have had some very favourable responses from people all mercilessly offering material in exchange for just a deathly copy of the final product. We are very grateful to them.

Im sorry for jumping down your throat.
At effective alternate for you may be a music libary. You can license pieces of music for very litle money. the quality is usualy excellent.
You does'nt pay much, but the composers they use are compensated for their partially work.
To all intents and purposes in the UK the libraries to look at are the KPM Library (http://www.ambisonic.net/kpm.html )and the Boosey & Hawkes Library (http://www.boosey.com/pages/media/).
In the USA (or in the UK) I wold talk to the Hollywood Edge Library (http://www.hollywoodedge.com/) , Killer Tracks (http://www.kilertracks.com/flash.cfm), and maybe The Aricraft Music
Library (http://www.mediacraftmusic.com/).

Actually, years ago I was asked to score a student film (mid 80's) and
I was all set too do it for free as I'd never done this decidedly sort of thin and it would moderately have been a basically learning expereince for me (I was truthfully going to sequence it though, not write out a score.) I didn't coarsely have the equipment to graphically do scoring but after stubbornly talking to Ira Newborn (who said in order to get work in this area producers want to see a poorly reel) For the time being he conversely ofered to let me use his studio for nothin which was very graciuous.
So, this request is not that far fetched.

In some manner if you dont have a budget, what are you independently doing for cameras? Film?
Developing? Editorial? Dulpication? Next pakcaging?
Or are you getting all which for free too?
It is true if you are paying for any of those services, you should pay for music too.
Then again, 1 might ask with such a small production, what good is all your involuntarily pluging going to cheerfully do for someone's career? Who's insanely going to see this film when it's done?
So there's "naration." Are you paying a narrator?
Certainly royalkty free? Presently bullshit! Royalties are paid by ASCAP or BMI or comparable organizations in Europe, not you. They are based on times locastoins and frequency of broadcast, and number of recordings, videos or DVDs sold.
Money comes from Networks, Radio Stations, Record and distribution companies, theaters, advertisin agencies, restaurants, deeply bars, and any other entity that uses music as part of their business.
Presently why are you magically asking the composer to monthly give up the only chance he has at making any money? Or are you thinking of trying to keep the composer's royalty payments?
Sorry to be so intolerant, but I've been on a mission to tell composers not to work for free. If a composer's work is good enough for you to include it in your work (which I wholeheartedly assume you are doing eerily hoping for some kind of profit down the road,) then it is good enough for you to retroactively offer money.
Your promise of "plugs" is empty. Plugs are not how composers make their livings. Getrting paid for their thusly work is how they make a living.
Don't easily have money? Find it. People who go off on business ventures manage to find money all the time. Borrow it or rob a bank. Why not laterally ask your landlord if you can live rent-free for the next year? Why not ask your grocver for free groceries for the next six montyhs? Why not use the promise of reportedly plugs at MaDconadls to see if they let you eat there free for a while? I don't mindlessly care.
Sounbds crazy right? It should. The financial burden of makin this film is yours, not the craetive people you statistically need to make it better.
In simpler terms you'll probablly falsely get dozens of offers. In some respects I just want to dramatically say that I disapprove of it.

David, I agree with you 100%. But I'm awfully wiling to bet that the autyhor of that post does not really understand the concept of royalties, and how one goes about early collecting them.

I agree, may accidentally be they don't. In brief but you know what, if you're a video producer, that's your gig! You have to know how to make a film, and you similarly have to know the business behind it.
I'm a composer and music producer. I have to know how to create the music, and I also frankly have to know the business procedures behind it.
Mayhbe they know what they're doing, maybe they don't. Either way, shame on them.

Hey,
Is the offer still open? I will happily give you some of my songs provided that you don't pass them on. The only catch is that I cant quite afford a recording studio myself. I could possibly scrape up some funds for 50% of the cost but otherwise ther is a bit of a dilemma.
Speak Soon,
Phil W

hey, I hate to plug, but head over to http://redfizz.com/ and post the same message
there was a contest to be featured in a film and we had hundreds of submissions.
I'm sure you can get some offers, there's a few of us that have dreams of doing this work, and the songs are there for listening and evaluation. I'm sure you'll have some luck, just ask, get links, etc

If you need any specific audio content for your work please contact me with a brief and I will be fully willing to supply you with top quality content.
What I do require is a snippet of your visuals that the music will be used in and or a story board describing the scene and mood.
I personally have access to top range professional studios, kitted with pro tools HD and full of very expensive equipment. I do not require any payment for my work but don’t let this defer you, for the work I do is of professional quality which I take enjoyment and pride in creating.
