I am turning a barn into a studio, and it has 10' ceilings. should I put in a lower ceiling as far as acoustics go? sound proofing isn't an issue.

no no, volume is good, you want the space to have a cubic volume of at least 1500cf.

Search around John Sayers forum

for a room mode calculator to find optimum dimenensions

also read through Auralex's acoustics 101
http://www.acoustics101.com/default.asp

basically you want to follow the "Golden Ratio" of 1.6, so if your ceiling is 10, then the width would be 16 and the length would be 26.
