I want to know to make my vocals sound good & cear when I record.
Lets cover the basics.
First, you need a good room to record in. Quiet and not a lot of reflected echo.
Second, a decent microphone.
Third a way to get it onto tape or into the computer.
Finally, it's up to you. A good guitarist will sound like themselves no matter what guitar they pick up. Tone comes from the player.
So your skills will make the difference, a good teacher and coach will really make the difference on how you sound.
Actually, I kinda disagree with monkey work. It all depends on the type of vocals you want and the type of voice you have. as far as a room that is quiet and no echo...Motown recorded their sound in a very large open room which created warm and soulful bellows that game vocals that unique sound...later coined that Motown Sound. A room that is quiet with no hollowness will create plain crisp vocals. Good if you are an R&B singer looking for your voice but not good for that soulful warm tone sound. Why do you think most people sound good singing in the shower. Also, it would be very beneficial to learn all the effects and things in cool edit pro...I've seen an alley drunk sound like a star after being tweaked in cool edit pro and mixed down.
you can always add effects in post. To remove bad room sound, too much reverb, traffic, neighbors refrigerator, is a lot more difficult.
nothing ruins a good take like the AC clicking on.
You are right monkey...it does makes sense to not have any other sounds present. my fish tank had to be unplugged because my mic was so sensitive it was picking up the gurgling sounds....
well if you're doing a remake of yellow submarine... that might be perfect!
WHAT EFFECTS TO USE TO MAKE YOUR VOCALS CLEAR
really depends on what kind of voice you have and what sound you are looking for. There are many to choose from but if you want to email me I can help you out with a few favorites I use. My email is <email> .
